Eggplant
The "King of vegetables"

Latin Name: Solanum melongena
Other Comercial Names: Aubergine, Eggplant, Brinjal, Baigan, Melongene, Terong, Melanzana, Patlican, Ravaya.

Known as the “king of vegetables”, the eggplant is native to southern India and Sri Lanka. It is a short-lived perennial plant often cultivated as an annual. It grows 40 to 150 cm tall. The stem is often spiny. The fruit is fleshy, less than 3 cm in diameter on wild plants, but much larger in cultivated forms. The fruit contains numerous small, soft seeds which are edible.

Did You Know... Eggplant is often described (under the name brinjal) as the ‘King of Vegetables’ in South India.

Selection criteria: Choose a firm, smooth-skinned eggplant that is heavy for its size; avoid those with soft or brown spots.
Periods when cultivated: Year-round
