PINEAPPLE

Pineapple
A tropical fruit known worldwide

Latin Name: Ananas comosus
Other Comercial Names: Pineapple, Ananas, Nanas, Piña

The pineapple is a tropical plant and fruit, probably native to Uruguay, Brazil or Paraguay.

The pineapple is an example of a multiple fruit: multiple, spirally-arranged flowers along the axis each produce a fleshy fruit that becomes pressed against the fruits of adjacent flowers. Pineapples are the only bromeliad fruit in widespread cultivation.

Pineapple is high in fibre and contains modest amounts of Vitamin C, Potassium and a unique digestive enzyme called bromelain. In addition, pineapple contains other micro-nutrients vital to health.

It is one of the most commercially important plants which carry out Crassulacean acid metabolism.

Did You Know... Pineapples were given their name because the explorer Christopher Columbus thought they looked like a pine cone.
